Anna Fontcuberta i Morral appointed as the new president of EPFL
We're thrilled to announce that NCCR SPIN Principal Investigator Anna Fontcuberta i Morral has been appointed as the new president of EPFL by the Federal Council on March 27. She will succeed Martin Vetterli starting January 1, 2025.
Professor Fontcuberta i Morral is a renowned expert in materials science and engineering and currently serves as a professor at EPFL in Lausanne. With a remarkable career, she has led the Laboratory of Semiconductor Materials to become a global leader in sustainable nanotechnologies and co-founded the successful start-up Aonex Technologies. She's deeply involved in EPFL's academic administration and actively contributes to various scientific advisory boards and committees.
In addition to her groundbreaking research, Professor Fontcuberta i Morral is committed to education and nurturing young scientists. She's been recognized for her exceptional teaching and has received numerous awards for her research contributions, including prestigious grants and distinctions. She has also received various awards for her research, including the Marie Curie Excellence Grant in 2005 and the ERC Starting Grant in 2009, as well as the SNSF Back-up Schemes Consolidator Grant in 2015 and the Emmy Noether Distinction from the European Physical Society.
As the first woman to be appointed president of EPFL, Professor Fontcuberta i Morral brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the role. Her diverse background, which includes studying physics in Barcelona and completing her PhD in France, as well as her extensive international research experience, makes her uniquely qualified for this position.
