Prof. Dr. Ilaria Zardo is awarded the Emmy Noether Distinction of the European Physical Society

The NCCR SPIN is proud to bring to attention that Prof. Dr. Ilaria Zardo will be awarded the Emmy Noether Distinction of the European Physical Society (EPS) in the mid-career category!

Prof. Dr. Ilaria Zardo is the head of the Nanophononics group of the Department of Physics as well as the Nano Technology Center at the Swiss Nanoscience Institute at the University of Basel and a principal investigator at NCCR SPIN. She was appointed assistant professor at the Department of Physics at the University of Basel in 2015 and was promoted to associate professor in 2020.

Ilaria Zardo receives Emmy Noether Distinction « for her contributions in the methodology of characterizing nanoscale materials and the consequent discovery of their new functional properties ».

Her research group investigates fundamental processes in tailored nanostructures. In particular, they study excitations of the crystal lattice (phonons) with the aim of engineering them and of developing new measurement methods. Their work contributes to a better understanding of the thermal properties of nanomaterials and supports the realization of phonon-based devices.

On top of her scientific research, Ilaria Zardo has always engaged in many actions designed to encourage and stimulate young women’s scientific careers.

The European Physical Society has established the Emmy Noether Distinction for Women in Physics in 2013. Its aim is to bring noteworthy women physicists to the wider attention of the scientific community, policy makers and the general public, but also to identify role models that will help to attract women to a career in physics.

We warmly congratulate Ilaria Zardo for her achievements and wish her more success to come in her career!
