Heike Riel wins the IEEE Andrew S. Grove Award 2022
NCCR SPIN is proud to announce that our Vice Director, Dr. Heike Riel from IBM, has won the prestigious 2022 IEEE Andrew S. Grove Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to solid-state devices and technology. The award is sponsored by the IEEE Electron Devices Society, which promotes excellence in the field. This recognition comes after her 2022 election to the national academy of engineering “for global leadership and technical innovations in the semiconductor industry, covering OLED, fundamental device processes, materials, and nanowire devices.” Heike Riel is an IBM Fellow, Head of Science & Technology, and Quantum Computing Europe and Africa Lead at IBM Research. She was awarded “for contributions to materials for nanoscale electronics and organic light-emitting devices.” The award ceremony took place at the 68th International Electron Devices Meeting in San Francisco.
Dr. Riel is a distinguished expert in nanotechnology and nanosciences and focuses her research on advancing the frontiers of information technology through the physical sciences. She contributed to advancements in the science and technology of nanoscale electronics. In particular, Heike Riel contributed to the exploration and development of semiconducting nanowires and nanostructures for applications in future electronic and optoelectronic devices, molecular electronics for future nanoscale switches and memory applications, and organic light-emitting diodes for display applications. Her current research interests include new materials and device concepts for future nanoelectronics for applications in neuromorphic and quantum computing, including building Silicon spin qubits with the NCCR team.
